NAMI Louisiana Meets With East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library

On Thursday, May 24, NAMI Louisiana met at the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library to discuss mental health community resources with each of the branches throughout the parish. The East Baton Rouge Parish Library system is a vital community service organization that connects its patrons with free information, material, resources, and technology, which is why NAMI Louisiana was proud to discuss our peer-led programs that can provide free education, skills training and support.

Among those representing NAMI Louisiana, we were proud to have Tonja Myles, a Peer Support Specialist, bring forth not only her lived experience with having a mental health condition, but also the local resources she has found and worked with to help the community gain a better understanding of how to navigate a mental health crisis. She stressed the importance of those within the library staff undergoing mental health first aid training, so that they can better be able to recognize the signs of patrons experiencing a mental health crisis and help direct them to local organizations that can help them receive the treatment they need.

At NAMI Louisiana, our mission to eradicate the stigma, myths, and misconceptions of mental illnesses begins through education and community outreach. Even though one in four families experience some form of brain disorder, there are few educational sources that explain the treatment and recovery process. The lack of knowledge about brain disorders in the medical profession and the public is immense. Through developing close working relationships with many collaborative coalitions such as the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System, we are better able to educate our members and the public.
