Hitting Health and Safety Out of the Park: Jacobs Health and Safety Picnic 2018

As events begin to kick off throughout our community in honor of May being Mental Health Month, NAMI Louisiana was proud to participate in the Jacobs Health and Safety Picnic held May 1 at Jacobs in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Operating under the baseball theme of "Hitting Health and Safety Out of the Park," the annual picnic offered burgers, hotdogs and ice cream, as well as the chance to connect with dozens of local vendors dedicated to the health and welfare of Baton Rouge.

A strong core value of Jacobs, safety "is more than a policy manual or a training video," it's "a culture of caring – a culture in which safety, health and welfare are top priorities; and in which we’re all responsible for looking out for one another." The event truly hit on its core values of looking out for one another as one of its own employees, Jeff Liberty, along with his wife Kathryn, came out in support of NAMI by advocating the importance of mental health programs after losing their son to suicide this past year.

Over 40,000 American lives are lost to suicide every year, and suicide has become the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. If you or someone you know is in an emergency, call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or call 911 immediately.

We would like to thank Jacobs for allowing us to spread awareness about mental health and offer information about our local support groups in the area, as well as Jeff and Kathryn Liberty for truly representing the values of supporting those in our community upon which this event came together to promote. We would also like to thank the members of our affiliates, NAMI Acadiana and NAMI Baton Rouge, who came out and are pictured below.
